I didn't order the breakfast, but booking.com charged me for it anyway. I even told the clerk that at check-in, but there was nothing she could do about it. The room was great, the renovation has been very well done. The hotel is surrounded by empty buildings. It may be a flag planted around which to revive the city, but so far that hasn't happened.

The St James is a beautiful hotel in such an important location in American history, near the Edmund Pettus bridge. All the staff we interacted with (front desk, housekeeping, bartender, server) were warm, friendly and professional. The courtyard is gorgeous and relaxing. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and the food and drinks were fantastic!

Shelly

The location is excellent. Our room had a fantastic view of the Pettus Bridge and Alabama River. The interior courtyard was beautiful. The history is interesting and rich. The hotel was very clean, and the staff was especially attentive and friendly. The towels are awesome. Brass fixtures in bathroom were elegant. The bed was comfortable.

Shanda

Locational was amazing -- 1837 building was right on the riverbank with views of the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Staff super friendly and knowledgeable about local history, ESPECIALLY SHONDRELL who answered all our questions about the area. Restaurant was good, lucky because nothing else in the neighborhood was open on a Monday night.

Ann

Love all the old floors, fireplaces, light fixtures, high ceilings etc. We thought the merging of the old with new - such as bathroom was well done. Really nice to be by the river and bridge. People at the desk are exceptionally nice.
